Reviving a Legacy in The Heart of Portsmouth

Welcome to the Treadwell Mansion, a boutique hotel inspired by the rich architectural and civic legacy of Portsmouth, New Hampshire.

Our name honors Jacob Treadwell’s Mansion, a grand Georgian home built in the 1760s that once stood just blocks from where you are now. A hub of elegance and culture, it hosted figures like George Washington and Marquis de Lafayette and stood at the crossroads of history until its carriage house located behind the mansion was demolished to make room for a bowling alley. The loss of that iconic structure outraged the community and sparked a historic preservation movement that soon led to the founding of Strawbery Banke Museum in 1957. (Now just blocks from the Treadwell Mansion)

The Treadwell Mansion exists in that spirit, where heritage meets modern hospitality. We’re more than a place to stay; we’re a tribute to the city’s resilience, and a reminder of how one lost landmark reshaped the way Portsmouth protects its past.

With contactless convenience, thoughtful design, and deep local roots, the Treadwell Mansion invites you to experience the city not just as it is, but as it was meant to be.
